This my first finished spread of the bike story i've been working on. I can't decide if it's finished or if it needs something. But i'm going to leave it now, work on the next spread and then revisit it.

The mixed media is a new approach for for me, i'm really happy with the way the shed/bike part is looking. It's a fun way to work as i'm always questioning "What could I draw that in?" "How could that look?"

Abby requested I post up a picture of this print I did last year. It's using a technique called Thermography, it used to be really popular for business cards and letterheads and such.

Basically you print the image with ink as normal, then while it's still wet you sprinkle on the powder which, when heated, melts and becomes the metallic surface. It has a very interesting texture.

Stamping ground

I'm doing something i've not done in a while, i'm getting experimental a mixing it up a bit. I've decided to get a bunch of textures and introduce some new elements into my work. As a bit of a challenge I think it will extend my work a bit further. Getting colour and interesting techniques into my work is going to fun and i'm excited about making u a few final page spreads for my current picture book.

Also, i've just booked to go to Bologna for the children's book fair. I went a few years ago and it was amazing! And i've always intended to go again after university so i'm really looking forward to it. It really inspired me a few years ago and set me on my current course, so i'm looking forward to revisiting and seeing what I can take from seeing so much wicked illustration!

Hello!

I hope everyone has enjoyed the holidays!

In the weeks leading up to Christmas I was working

with a few of the students from Plymouth University designing and building/decorating Santa's Grotto over in the museum. It was great fun, we wanted something slightly different but still in the spirit of Christmas and ended up with these structure made of big octagons which the students painted wintery scenes and images on, lit by loads of fairy lights, lovely!

Check out the images below, including one of me on the big guys seat (I think it actually looks quite menacing!)

By the way, I couldn't decide on a favourite word. So I just did 'articulate'.

Here are a couple of page spread idea's i'm working on at the moment for my bike ride story, i'm mainly thinking about movement and experimentation for the environment, hopefully then the backgrounds and places they move through can spice up what is essentially the same two characters on every single page!

This is my comic submission for the Jonathan Cape/Observer Comic competition. It's about a plutonic relationship between a young boy and girl, and then they see a newly wed couple, and the idea that their relationship could be romantic is a new concept to them. I named it after the song 'Love' by Nancy Adams from the Disney Robin Hood, because I listened to it while I was drawing and it seemed to fit!

Past Present and Future with Plymouth University

Hello,

If you read back a few posts you will see that I had been working as art director and illustrator on a huge window project for Plymouth city council/the university, and it's finally printed and up! It looks wicked! There's a real difference to seeing your

work scaled up so much, it makes a great difference to the line qualities especially having a mixture of illustrators work next to each other, I love it! It's also a real satisfaction having work up in the high street for the foreseeable future.

Here are some pics..

My work is the Brunel and the little rascals running! Other people illustrating for the project were Abby Regler, Josh Neal, Jake Rowlinson, Alex Walker, Pip Stewart, Jo Larsen-Burnett, Tom Venn, Emma Carlisle and Bex Edwards. Bikes

The latest story i've been working on is to do with two brothers that love going on bike rides. I've been drawing these boys on their bikes for ages now and thought it was about time to start working on some more finished images. I've got a few idea's I want to get into a few pages so it's time to get on it.

Basically I like to draw really small pictures. And with this image I wanted to see how it looks if I size up these small pictures to reveal all the nice pen marks, slight ink bleeds and tiny mistakes. I think it has it's charm.

Not posted in a while. My girlfriend Abby told me off and said I should blog more! She's out in Japan at the moment doing loads of amazing things, so it's easy for her to blog! (Check out spindlesticks-in-japan.blogspot.com! It's incredible!)

I, on the other hand, am working lot's at Domino's pizza. It's good, but it means i'm not keeping up to date with blogging, website etc. As soon as I can i'll post up some of the new work i've been doing.

Also, the window project I was working on for Plymouth city council should be up very very soon so that will be wicked!

Hello,

Now then! University is finished with and the hectic period between leaving Uni, exhibiting at D&AD and coming back home seems just about over! University of Plymouth did really well at D&AD, my friend Nic Farrell picked up an award for her brilliant typographic work, and all our work just looked really good in general. It was also really cool to see the other uni's work, great stuff!

My latest project is a huge collaboration between me and a few of my former classmates from Plymouth, it's a huge vinyl window sticker for the Plymouth city council, been drawing some Victorian lads to go in there.

End of year Experiments

Hi all,

I'm now nearing the end of my degree, and i'm spending my remaining time on a bit of an experimental book project. (i'll put some photos up soon)

And also, i'm experimenting in the print studios, trying to make my own letterpress plates for pictures. I've used a paper stencil to apply the ground to zinc plates to make a sort of reverse etching, it's taking a while to etch all the background away enough so today we're going to try a few other things! It's all quite exciting, although i sort of wish i had started this earlier!

Plymouth Museum

Hello!

Plymouth museum are putting on an exhibition of children's book illustration, 'Draw me a Story' starts on Saturday 23rd. From what Emma at the museum has shown me there's some really awesome work going on show, I'm really looking forward to seeing it all! I also just think it's really cool that they're exhibiting children's illustration.

And, as part of the exhibition they also asked a few of us to work on a mural to decorate the wall about the artwork, I think it came out really nicely. Here are a few shots of my bits, but you can see more (better) pictures of everyones work at the Plymouth museum flickr

My first 24 hour comic

As I said A few weeks ago, I took part in a 24 hour comic event. The mission was to create a 24 page comic, from scratch, in 24 hours and here's the result! It's basically a story about zombies hunting down the villagers. I really had a lot of fun doing it, and i'm pretty happy with what I did, but it's mostly about what I learned. Compacting an entire creative process into such a short time really taught me a lot about my working process. Here are a few pages:

Twenty Four Hour Comic!

Yesterday at 10:30am was the official end of the 24 hour comic event in Liskeard. 24 pages in 24 hours! It was an incredible event, truly epic! And got to meet some very nice people in the process. The work i've done is still with the organisers Tom and Phil while they scan it, and I just got back from a 10 mile race! So i'll write a bit more about it when the work is online. Here are a couple of drawings I did yesterday, the first is an abducted human and the second is of ghosts. After having a slight mental block for the last couple of weeks i've broken out of it by drawing ghosts, people being abducted by UFO's and well lots of circles. My children's book i'm writing for the Macmillan book prize this year is going to be about a child overwhelmed by fear, and then overcoming it. I need to sort out the plot a bit (todays task) but thats the concept!

Yesterday we went for a cheeky afternoon pint, I had a cider. And me and Emma Carlisle played this brilliant game where we'd try and draw pokemon from memory! It's so much fun! Most of mine are so bad, but I think my favourite is Koffing, or maybe Farfetch'd! I was quite fond of Emma's Charmander as well!

Belated happy New Year! And Happy Christmas!

So far the year has started off very well! Instead of us starting our Huge Major Project (HMP) when we went back to uni on the 10th like responsible people, our tutors scheduled a trip to Paris! They're geniuses! It was so, so good. The Parisian architecture is really beautiful and we had some great experiences! I think one of my highlights would be ice skating, with mulled wine, on the Eiffel Tower!

Started the HMP now though, getting into it. Its time for another childrens book. Its a process I really enjoy and its also been my most successful work on the course so far, so i'm looking forward to the rest of the year.

The other day I printed baby grows to sell at this hand made Christmas market in Paignton on sunday (Broody much?) I made a couple for the temporary shop our class had and they both sold! So hopefully I can sell a couple more!

Here's some of the drawing I did while I was in Barcelona and Madrid. I preferred Barcelona There's so much there! There's a massive man made beach, amazing Art Nouveau architecture (the Park Guell is really a fantastic place to be in!) and what I most of all wanted to go on is this incredible cable car that takes you up to this castle and has a super view of the entire city!

Here's a picture of my desk at the moment! It's super sunny and warm so I get to draw outside the paper is bright so im squinting alot but it's so worth it! I dont really want to put any work up at the moment because I don't have a scanner and when ever I photograph drawings its difficult since they come out dark, so i'll wait.

I'm getting too bad at not updating this blog! My excuse being that i've been pretty busy finishing off the year. Here are a couple of shots of my section of the end of year show. It was a really fantastic exhibition, there was a load of people there, a great atmosphere and everyones art work looked really good! I feel a bit sad to be finishing the year, its been a sweet year. But i'm looking forward to the summer, got a good few projects planned to do! Including London on sunday (30th) to take part in Streetfest which i'm super psyched for!

The Batman I drew for Dave in the 1st year, he was collect a picture of Batman from everyone, it was well good to see different interpretations of him! Been AGES since i've posted anything up so here's some new work, i've been working on a childrens book for the Macmillan book prize so that's where my head's at right now! I seriously cannot wait to have a bit of a break though! I've been so busy with project's AND getting a VESPA!! So i'm super excited to be going to Italy next week and generally slacking off over easter! Not to mention eating loads of sweets when lent is finished!
